Introduction
On 1 September 2024, we celebrate 25 years of modern competition law in South Africa — a pivotal milestone in the country's journey towards a fair and dynamic economy. When the Competition Act of 1998 was enacted in 1999, it marked the beginning of a transformative era aimed at fostering economic reform and ensuring that all South Africans could participate equally in the national economy. This landmark legislation has been instrumental in promoting fair competition, enhancing consumer welfare and advancing employment opportunities, contributing to a more equitable and robust economic landscape.
Over the past quarter-century, we've seen tremendous progress in how competition law shapes business practices and market dynamics. Despite the challenges that remain, the commitment to creating a level playing field and driving innovation continues.
In this special feature, we invite you to explore the evolution of competition law through the eyes of our team and leading industry stalwarts. Discover their reflections on the most exciting developments and insights into the impact of competition law not only in South Africa but across the African continent. Join us in celebrating this milestone and envisioning the future of competition law as we continue to champion fairness and opportunity in the marketplace.
