Practical Experience
Alex Ferreira is a director in ENSafrica’s employment department. He specialises in all types of labour matters, with a particular focus on employment litigation including Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (“CCMA”), bargaining council, Labour Court, Labour Appeal Court, High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal cases.
Alex’s practice is primarily aimed at servicing corporate clients, and a significant portion of his client base consists of German, United Kingdom and North American multinationals requiring advice and assistance for their business interests in southern Africa. In addition, he also advises on employment law in a variety of African jurisdictions, in particular Mozambique.
His experience includes advising on collective labour law issues, as well as labour disputes, dismissals for misconduct, poor performance and retrenchments, section 197 business transfers, and strategic advice in relation to trade unions. He is also experienced in obtaining strike interdicts, enforcing and opposing restraint of trade agreements, reviewing CCMA decisions, drafting employment contracts, brokering severance/settlement agreements as well as formulating and reviewing employment policies and procedures, and assisting clients with disciplinary enquiries and in-house investigations where employee misconduct is suspected.
He has presented at seminars and training workshops over many years on a variety of employment law issues and is the author of articles and updates for Labour Law for Managers: A Practical Handbook. He has also featured in radio and television interviews concerning various employment law issues.
Alex has also presided over various matters as an acting judge of the Labour Court of South Africa.
